What is it?
Diabetes affects the small blood vessels at the back of the eye. Over time these can leak, swell, or bleed — a condition called diabetic retinopathy. Early stages have no symptoms. If you have diabetes, an annual dilated retinal examination is the single most important thing you can do for your vision.
Symptoms to watch for
- Floaters or dark strings in your vision
- Blurred or fluctuating vision
- Dark or empty patches
- Difficulty perceiving colours
- Vision loss
How we treat it at Hussain Eye Care
We screen with a dilated fundus examination and OCT when indicated. Early disease is monitored with tighter sugar control; advanced disease may need laser treatment or referral for intravitreal therapy. We coordinate closely with your physician.
Every diabetic should have a screening exam at diagnosis and at least once a year thereafter, even with no symptoms.
