What is it?
Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, usually from elevated pressure inside the eye. It typically has no early symptoms — by the time vision feels different, the damage is permanent. The good news: with early diagnosis and consistent treatment, most patients keep useful vision for life.
Symptoms to watch for
- Often no symptoms in early stages
- Gradual loss of peripheral vision
- Tunnel vision in advanced disease
- Eye pain, nausea, halos (acute angle-closure — a true emergency)
How we treat it at Hussain Eye Care
We measure intraocular pressure, examine the optic nerve, and order a visual field test when indicated. Treatment usually starts with eye drops to lower pressure. Laser and surgical options are available when drops are not enough. Lifelong follow-up is essential.
If you are over 40 — or have a family history of glaucoma — schedule a baseline screening, even with no symptoms. Acute red-eye with nausea and halos is an emergency: call us immediately.
